The moon landing hoax claim

Refuted

Ruled out by official inquiry or direct observation

The claim

The 1969 moon landing was said to have been staged and filmed on Earth.

Where it started

The claim spread through self-published books and broadcasts in the mid-1970s in the United States and was translated widely afterwards.

Where it stands

Descent stages, equipment and tracks left at several landing sites are visible in high-resolution images from a lunar orbiter. The laser reflectors placed by the crews are still used by observatories on Earth to measure the distance to the Moon. Several countries, the Soviet Union among them, tracked the transmissions independently, and laboratories around the world analysed the returned samples.
