Declassified

Things that were rumour and became official record, and things that spread widely and have been ruled out. Every entry carries the claim in one line, where it started, where it stands now, its primary sources and the date we last checked them. We make no claims of our own.

What is here

23 entries in all. One entry that stands up matters more than a long list.

Korean cases the state confirmed late

Events that lived as rumour or private testimony until special acts, government inquiries and truth commission findings put them on the record.

Cold War operations opened by declassification

Speculation before the files were released and record afterwards. Where a plan was written but never carried out, we say so.

Experiments on people

State research that used people without their consent. Inquiry reports and formal apologies are on the record.

Surveillance and the press

Surveillance programmes and interference with journalism, with the established part separated from the part that is only a name.

Stories that were refuted

Widely repeated claims that official inquiries and direct observation have ruled out, with a note on why they spread.

Still open

Cases where the official record itself disagrees. We keep the summary of the claim short here on purpose.

What this site leaves out

Living individuals, companies that still trade, serving politicians, current elections, current health questions, the climate, and any story that points at an ethnic or religious group. It also means we leave out anything that has been neither established nor refuted, except where the official record itself is split and we say so.
