US human radiation experiments
EstablishedConfirmed as fact in the official record
The claim
The US government was said to have given people radioactive substances during the Cold War without their consent.
Where it started
The experiments ran from the 1940s into the 1970s. A local newspaper series in 1993 and the Energy Department's decision to open its records brought the full picture out.
Where it stands
A presidential advisory committee investigated in 1994 and 1995 and issued its final report in 1995. It confirmed thousands of government-supported experiments, many conducted without a consent process, and the president apologised on receiving the report.
