The claim
The US Central Intelligence Agency was said to have run experiments that used drugs and hypnosis to manipulate people's minds.
Where it started
The programme began in 1953 and most of its files were destroyed in 1973. Government inquiries made the name public in 1975, and about twenty thousand pages of financial records that had escaped destruction surfaced in 1977.
Where it stands
A joint Senate hearing in 1977 confirmed the programme officially. Research was contracted out to universities, hospitals and prisons, and cases were confirmed in which subjects were given drugs without consent. Because so many files were destroyed, the full extent is still unknown.
