The Tuskegee syphilis study
EstablishedConfirmed as fact in the official record
The claim
US public health authorities were said to have watched participants with syphilis for decades without treating them.
Where it started
The study began in Alabama in 1932. A news agency report in 1972 made it public and the study was stopped that year.
Where it stands
An advisory panel's 1973 final report found the study unethical, and the participants' class action ended in a settlement. A US president apologised formally in 1997. The case led directly to the modern framework for research ethics.
