Samcheong re-education camps

Established

Confirmed as fact in the official record

The claim

In 1980 people were said to have been rounded up without warrants and sent to army camps for what the state called purification training.

Where it started

The programme ran under martial law in 1980 and was reported at the time as a social clean-up campaign. Survivor testimony reached the public through a 1988 parliamentary hearing.

Where it stands

A 2004 act on restoring the honour of and compensating those harmed made the state's acknowledgement official, and the defence ministry's commission on past incidents published its findings in 2007. What is established is detention without legal basis, and the deaths and injuries that followed.
