Bodo League massacre

Established

Confirmed as fact in the official record

The claim

Witnesses said that in the first weeks of the Korean War the government executed civilians listed on a register of former leftists.

Where it started

Accounts existed from the summer of 1950 but were not examined publicly. A brief parliamentary inquiry in 1960 was shut down the following year. Press reports and the recovery of remains reopened the subject after 1999.

Where it stands

Between 2007 and 2010 Korea's Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued findings on cases across the country, held the state responsible and recommended an apology. Courts later awarded damages against the state. The total number killed is not established, because records are missing for many localities.
