No Gun Ri
EstablishedConfirmed as fact in the official record
The claim
Survivors said that in July 1950 US troops fired on refugees near No Gun Ri in central Korea.
Where it started
The survivors' accounts circulated for decades without official examination. A 1999 report by a US news agency brought the case to international attention and both governments opened inquiries.
Where it stands
Korea and the United States investigated separately from 1999 to 2001. In 2001 the US government acknowledged that refugees were killed by American fire. Korea passed a special act in 2004 for victim review and restoration of honour. Whether an order to fire was given remains disputed between the two inquiries and is not established.
