Jeju 4.3 Incident

Established

Confirmed as fact in the official record

The claim

For decades, survivors said that state forces killed large numbers of civilians on Jeju Island around 1948, and the story stayed inside families.

Where it started

The events ran from 1948 to 1954 and could not be spoken of publicly for a long time. A 1978 novella brought the subject into open discussion, and calls for an official inquiry grew after 1987.

Where it stands

A special act was passed in 2000 and the government's investigation report was adopted in 2003, followed by a formal state apology the same year. What is established is that the killings happened and that state forces carried them out. The victim count is still revised as claims are reviewed.
