Intelligence agencies and journalists
Partly establishedPart confirmed, the rest not yet
The claim
The CIA was said to have run an operation called Mockingbird that bought journalists in order to steer public opinion.
Where it started
Congressional inquiries in the mid-1970s and a 1977 magazine article spread the story, and the name Mockingbird became its shorthand.
Where it stands
The Senate select committee's 1976 report established that the agency used journalists and news organisations as assets. No released government record confirms a single operation of that name. The relationship is established; the name and the scale are not.
