Iran-Contra

Established

Confirmed as fact in the official record

The claim

The US government was said to have sold weapons to Iran and diverted the proceeds to rebels in Nicaragua.

Where it started

A Lebanese magazine reported the arms sales in November 1986. Congressional inquiries and an independent counsel investigation followed within months.

Where it stands

The 1987 report of the joint House and Senate committees, and the independent counsel's final report, established both the arms sales and the diversion of funds. Several officials were indicted and some were later pardoned.
