The Kennedy assassination records

Open

The official record itself disagrees

The claim

Was there a conspiracy beyond a single gunman in 1963?

Where it started

A presidential commission concluded in 1964 that one man acted alone. In 1979 a House select committee reached a different conclusion, finding a probable conspiracy on the basis of acoustic evidence. The two conclusions still sit side by side in the official record.

Where it stands

A 1992 statute gathered the records at the National Archives and releases continue. What has been released supports the finding that agencies withheld information from the original inquiry, but it does not establish a conspiracy. The acoustic analysis behind the 1979 conclusion has been challenged repeatedly since. We therefore leave this open.
